Nehemiah 3

Collaboration. Unity. I may have miscounted, but it looks like Nehemiah 3 accounts for close to 38 different groups who worked side by side to make repairs on Jerusalem's wall. To accomplish this kind of collaboration is no small feat; it certainly takes the move of God working through the gifts of a called leader.

We can hear the charge for collaboration all around us in our community. "Let's come together, let's work together, we all want the same thing." In your opinion, why doesn't this plea to unify often work? What "ingredients" are imperative for effective collaboration and the building of unity? I think the book of Nehemiah offers insights to these questions, but I'm curious as to your opinion as you consider these questions.

  1. Colossians 3:14... "And over all these virtues PUT ON LOVE, which BINDS THEM ALL TOGETHER IN PERFECT UNITY!!"
Colossians 3:23 "Whatever you do, work at it with ALL YOUR HEART, as working for the Lord, not for men,"
    1 Corinthians 12:12-31

Truth? We lack... We lack at the new... TO LOVE GOD, LOVE OTHERS... We lack at recieving His love... we lack at giving His love... in this we loose unity... We do, but we do expecting something in return, material things or high position... we grumble... we complain... we choose to go and do to much, then get angry that we 'do it all'... We lack at knowing what we should be doing and what others can do... we lack at just doing what we should and but we go and do what others should be doing... we get jealous of what others can do, so we try to do it, loosing sight of our own talents... leaving little traces of half done things, never really getting good at anything, because our focus is on the wrong thing.
I know this all to well... I still struggle with it... just doing what I ought and not doing what I ought not... Praying for the knowledge and discernment to know what it is I should be doing... and the strength and courage I need to do it... Then just do it with my whole heart, doing it for God not anyone else...

  2. Oh and I love Nehemiah 4:6 "So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half it's height, for the people worked with ALL THEIR HEART."

  3. Ya, I love 4:6 too. People weren't doing it out of guilt, or ought-ness, or image, etc...but the people were about this thing WITH ALL THEIR HEART.
