desegregating the Church

http://blog.beliefnet.com/jesuscreed/2010/01/the-new-desegregation_comments.html

If you check out the blog post above, you'll read some hopeful words about a few mega-churches that are intentionally working to become more diverse in their congregations. The blog post mentions Hybels/Bibbs at Willow Creek, though I'm not sure where the article is found that is referred to in the blog.

(if you click on comments below, Clint has provided the link to the full article in Time Magazine. I just printed off the full article and look forward to reading it!)

  3. This was such a well-written, objective article, but left me with a lot of questions about how desegregation can happen at Orchard Hill. Probably in the same way it needs to happen in our own individual friendships? Great link, Laura.

  4. An interesting article. I think it's a good journey that Willow is on, and they'll need to remain intentional. Our defaults seem to keep us so separate. I think additional issues to explore on the desegregating journey: are we more colorful, but just assimilating people into the dominate culture? What about class divisions? Is everyone middle and upper class professionals? What are the differences between "desegregation" and "reconciliation"? If I can work next to or worship next to a person of color and become friendly acquaintances, is that it, or does it go beyond that? I agree with your last sentence, MB. How will desegregation and reconciliation happen...probably in the same way it needs to happen in our own individual friendships.
